Contraception
Non-urgent advice: What is Contraception?
Contraception is the use of methods or devices to prevent pregnancy. There are many different types available, and the right choice will depend on your health, lifestyle, and personal preference.
Contraception works in different ways. Some methods, such as the pill, patch, or ring, use hormones to prevent the release of an egg each month. Others, such as intrauterine devices (IUDs or coils), work by changing the environment in the womb to stop a pregnancy developing. Barrier methods, such as condoms, prevent sperm from reaching the egg.
In addition to preventing pregnancy, some forms of contraception can also help with managing heavy or painful periods, and condoms provide protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Non-urgent advice: What contraception services we offer
Our practice provides the full range of female contraception, including the contraceptive pill, the contraceptive injection (Depo), intrauterine devices (coils), and contraceptive implants.
Dr McEwan and Dr Wyatt are specially trained to fit and remove coils and implants. If you are considering one of these options, please book an appointment with them to discuss your choice before arranging the fitting.
All other contraceptive methods, such as the pill or injection, can be discussed and prescribed by any of our GPs. Please make an appointment to talk through the options available so we can help you choose the method that best suits your needs.
Although we would always encourage teenagers and young people to discuss their sexual health/ contraception needs with a parent/ guardian/ trusted adult, we can see competent young people under the age of 16 without a parent/ guardian present if this is preferred.
